Joint Study Day: 'East meets West - Objects in Renaissance Paintings'

On 16 January 2019 the Islamic Art and Material Culture SSN and the SSN European Paintings pre-1900 will hold a collaborative Study Day to explore the exhibition Lorenzo Lotto Portraits and the National Gallery’s wider Renaissance collection through the theme of ‘East meets West’. The Renaissance period was a time when the cultures of Europe and the Islamic World interacted through trade, war and clashes of ideology. This is captured in paintings which depict objects and motifs from the Islamic World in a European setting.

Members of the Islamic Art and Material Culture SSN  and the SSN European Paintings pre-1900 will be able to come together to discuss the depiction of a range of objects and artefacts such as Anatolian style carpets (‘Lotto’ carpets) and to explore issues of status, identity and emotion in Renaissance paintings.

Discussions will be framed and complemented by introductions and observations by National Gallery Curators as well as leading experts Professor Deborah Howard and Professor Anna Contadini. There also will be opportunity for more informal networking over lunch.
